F.A.Q
Here are some of our most frequently asked questions, If your question has not been answered then please do email us and a we will try and provide a speedy reply.

A: P.O.L means Point of Lay. Point of lays are young hens that are around 17 weeks old up until they lay.

A: The hens main diet should be layers pellets. Offer on an ad-lib basis from point of lay.  Farmgate Layers feeds do not require any additional limestone or oyster shell grit.  The diet is fully balanced for optimum egg production, consistent shell quality, good yolk colour and excellent egg size.

    Treats inculde:
Scratch food, Mixed corn, give the hens a few handfuls in their run or in the garden each day, they love it, and it promotes natural behaviour

Household Scraps, any left over veg. or pasta from your meals the chickens will love. dont leave over night however as vermin love it to.

A: Like all animals hens mature at slightly dirfrent ages. We recommend not to worry if you haven't seen an egg for 3 weeks after you purchase the hens. The tell tell signs are the crown on top of the hens head will get larger and a bright red, this shows maturity and the hens will soon lay! Most hens wont lay until 22-24 weeks.

Q: How many years will my hens lay and live?
A:  Hens will lay for an AVERAGE of four years and can live up to 8!

A: If your going to buy a chicken or duck please try and bring a box. Cardboard is fine. We do try and supply them our self however we cannot garrentee that we always have some! A standard Cat box will hold two hens, so we work on that guideline.

A: Wing clipping just removes the flight feathers so the birds cannot gain hight. Its not perminent and it doesn't hurt the bird. Its just like cutting you nails or hair!
We can do it for you if you request it when purchasing the birds, and show you how to do it at home. It last around six weeks, by then you may not need to do it again if the birds become dosile and tame!

We don't wing clip parrots or parrakeets as it can stress them out too much.

Q: Do we need to make an appointment or pay to visit?
A: No. just pop in during one of our opening times and some one will be more then happy to help you. Feel more then welcome to just pop in for a look around!

Q: Whats the best type of parrot to own?
A: If you are a beginer we advise staying away from macaws and cockatoos, as lovely as these birds are they can be very demanding. However it doesnt mean that you cant have one.
Greys are one of the most well known, and are good talkers. Best thing to do is so some research and find the birds thats best for you.

Q: Do you supply all the things we need?
